WORLD CUP: USA SLIP TO DUTCH DEFEAT

December 4, 2022 2:06 pm

The United States exited the World Cup at the round of 16 stage after slipping to a 3-1 defeat by the Netherlands on Saturday afternoon.

As they have every game this tournament, Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson were awarded starts, with Ream winning his 50th cap in the process.

Despite a strong start from the States, they went into half-time two goals behind, with Memphis Depay and Daley Blind each sweeping home pinpoint deliveries from Denzel Dumfries.

Ream came incredibly close to halving the deficit early on in the second half when he poked goalwards at a corner, but a covering defender was able to hack his effort away from near the line.

Tim Ream goes agonisingly close to pulling one back for the United States

The USMNT did pull one back through substitute Haji Wright’s incredible or jammy – depending on how you look at it – flick, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Dumfries responded with a goal of his own five minutes later.

Those were the first goals that the States had conceded from open play in the World Cup, and Ream and Robinson can return to SW6 with their heads held high.
