MAN OF THE MATCH RESULT: SUNDERLAND

January 31, 2023 6:48 pm

Tom Cairney has been named Man of the Match from Fulham’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

The only man to have featured in each of our 24 fixtures this season across all competitions, Cairney has impressed whenever he’s been on the pitch, and that was the case again in Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup clash.

Patrolling the midfield in between João Palhinha and Andreas Pereira, Cairney dictated proceedings with his calibre of passing, finding his man with 92.7 per cent of his deliveries.

His most important contribution came just after the hour mark, though, when he showed some nifty footwork in the box to elude two Sunderland defenders, before smashing a shot inside the near post.

It was the skipper’s first goal of the season, which came as something of a relief!

“Layvin laid the ball back to me and I just chopped a couple of defenders, tried to get a yard, and put it in the near post,” TC told FFCtv. “I’ve had a few chances coming off the bench and I’ve been a bit mad!

“I missed one at home to Brighton that I should have scored and stuff like that, so it’s nice to get off the mark.”

Almost half (45.4%) of the fans who voted went for Cairney as their star man. Manor Solomon impressed on his first start and duly came second (33.7%), ahead of Andreas (8%).
