WILSON: WE’VE SET THE STANDARD

It’s a combination that linked up an impressive 13 times during the 21/22 season, but Harry Wilson had to wait until May to assist Aleksandar Mitrović for the first time in the Premier League.

The Welsh winger spent a large chunk of the current campaign sidelined with a knee injury, and his recent run in the team coincided with Mitro’s lengthy suspension.

But the two were up to their old tricks against Southampton, as the Serbian striker expertly dispatched Wilson’s cross in the 2-0 win at St Mary’s.

Wilson said: “Going into the game, we knew it was going to be tough because they were fighting for their lives. It was a must-win for them.

“I think we controlled the game without really creating any chances. The message from the gaffer at half-time was that the game would open up because they had to win, and when those spaces appear we needed to exploit that.

“We scored a good goal on the counter-attack and I think that really settled us down, and the second goal killed the game.”

Having played in a key part in Fulham’s Championship title win, a serious injury on the cusp of the new season was a significant blow for the 26-year-old.

“It was my first proper injury in my professional career so I found it hard to deal with, not being able to train and play. I was just focused on getting that right and I had the World Cup as well which I really wanted to get to.

“Luckily I managed to get to that and since then, the team has been in great form so it was about biding my time and when my opportunity came, making sure I was ready and showing the manager that I deserved to stay in the team.

“I feel like at the back end of the season I’ve really done that.”

Having already surprised many pundits, a win against Crystal Palace on Saturday would set a record-high points tally for Fulham in the Premier League.

“At the start of the season, a lot of people had us to finish in the bottom three. We were confident that with the players we had in this squad, that wasn’t going to happen, but we also had to go out on the pitch and show that.

“I think the start we made to the season – a couple of big results against some really top teams – really set us on our way and I don’t think we’ve looked back.

“There have been moments where results have dropped and performance levels haven’t been there, but I don’t think we’ve ever been in real danger of going down and that’s helped us play the football that we want to play and really enjoy games.

“As a team, we’ve set the standard this year so we’ve got to make sure that we follow it up next year.

“I think the football we’ve played and the results have come from hard work and a good base, and we need to make sure we continue that.

“And for me personally, it’s to keep playing regularly in the Premier League, keep trying to score, keep trying to assist and help the team finish as high up the league as we can.”
