Clarets suffer first defeat of pre-season at Cegeka Arena
Vincent Kompany handed a start to new signing James Trafford in-between the sticks and introduced striker Zeki Amdouni in the second half in a useful work out for the Clarets in Belgium.
This fixture was Genk’s final pre-season friendly of the summer with the Belgian Pro League side set to play Swiss side Servette on Tuesday in a UEFA Champions League qualifier.
First Half
The hosts took an early lead through Yira Sor, after Angelo Preciado’s initial effort was blocked well inside the area, Sor was there to slam home the rebound.
Burnley looked to respond just eight minutes later as Anass Zaroury’s well-worked cross eventually fell into the path of Josh Brownhill, but the midfielder’s effort was denied by the legs of a Genk defender in the six-yard area.
Scott Twine then tested Genk goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt from a corner as the Belgian tipped over Twine’s dangerous set-piece.
With half-an-hour played in Belgium, the home side looked to double their lead, as Mike Tresor’s cross was rifled just over the crossbar by defender Aziz Outtara from the edge of the area.
The two sides entered the break at the Cegeka Arena with Genk ahead.
Second Half
The first real chance of the second half fell to Twine, as the forward saw his half-volley fizz wide of the target in the 51st minute.
Before the hour, Genk skipper Tresor looked to thread a lobbed ball over the Clarets defence only for Trafford to gather.
Vincent Kompany turned to his bench on the hour mark introducing a trialist for Vitinho in attack.
Genk came close to adding a second of the evening when substitute Christopher Baah Bonsu hit a fierce long range effort which sailed just off target.
The lively Twine had his third opportunity of the friendly, but his strike from the edge of area was wide of the goal before making way for this week’s new signing Amdouni.
But it was the hosts who struck again late on, as Tolu Arokodare fired in from inside the area.
