Late Amdouni strike secures third round spot

Zeki Amdouni’s dramatic late goal against Nottingham Forest booked Burnley’s place in the Carabao Cup third round.

After an even affair at the City Ground, Amdouni was introduced in the 70th minute at the and fired in the winning goal a minute into stoppage time with a fine strike.

Manager Vincent Kompany made 10 changes from the side that played Aston Villa on the weekend with only Dara O’Shea keeping his place in the XI.

Amongst the 10 changes, Aaron Ramsey, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Nathan Redmond were all handed their first competitive starts for the Clarets.

First Half

After a quiet and even opening 20 minutes in Nottingham, there was a scare for the Forest defence as Boly’s pass back to Turner in goal was closed down by both Rodriguez and Redmond with the American shot-stopper eventually clearing the danger in time.

Burnley forced another corner when Muric’s lofted pass towards Bruun Larsen was brought down well by the Dane on the edge of the area before Williams cleared the ball away for a corner.

The Clarets were forced into an early change 10 minutes before the break when Vitinho made way for Al-Dakhil following a knock.

Moments after that change came a Forest chance, as former Claret Wood raced down the right and into the area before picking out Kouyate who rifled well over the target.

Second Half

Early into the second half the Clarets were then dealt another unfortunate blow when both Ramsey and Ekdal were both forced off through injury with the latter departing on a stretcher. Berge and Cullen were the pair introduced in place of them at the City Ground.

Shortly after the stoppage in play, the visitors came close when Redmond broke forward towards goal and played in Bruun Larsen to his left who nipped into the area before Turner darted out to gather the ball in the nick of time.

The lively Danish forward then had another opportunity after latching onto a ball over the top and working his way towards the edge of the box before striking the ball just wide of the post.

With just over 10 minutes to play, Kompany then introduced the attacking trio of Foster, Amdouni and Odobert for his debut replacing Bruun Larsen, Rodriguez and Redmond in search of a winning goal.

It was Forest though who were then closest to breaking the deadlock as Yates’ powerful diving header sailed into the side netting.

But a minute into stoppage time it was the Clarets who stole a late winner, as Berge did exceptionally well to break towards the box, before a deflected ball fell to Brownhill who guided it into the path of Amdouni, with the Swiss bringing it down excellently and slamming home past Turner.
