Irish midfielder reflects on Saturday’s loss
Josh Cullen says there’s no time for the Clarets to ‘feel sorry’ for themselves after suffering a 5-2 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League.
Burnley got off to a dream start at Turf Moor when Lyle Foster turned home Luca Koleosho’s cross but Spurs replied with a Heung Min Son hat-trick and strikes from James Maddison & Cristian Romero to seal a third win of the season.
Speaking post-match, the Ireland midfielder described it as a tough afternoon for the side but insists the team must stick together and keep on going.
Cullen said: “It was a tough afternoon for us. It was tough to take and these times now we need to show what we are about as a team.
“We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves and we need to pick ourselves up and go again. It’s early in the season and we have had a tough start but we need to improve and we know that.
“I thought we started on the front foot and had a good start, which we try do every game but any lapses of concentration are punished in this league and we saw that today.”
Cullen added: “It’s a game of fine margins, we could have gone into half-time at 1-1 and the second half starts a different game and even when they scored the third we could have pulled one back instantly.
“Whether we win, lose or draw we always watch it back and see what we could have done better and we’ll do that on Monday.
Burnley’s next game comes in 16 days with a second trip to the City Ground, after knocking Forest out the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Cullen says there is no time to dwell on the start to the season and the side will work hard to put things right following the international break
“Every game’s a big game. Whether that be Manchester City or Nottingham Forest and we know that we will need to be ready for that.
“We have the international break now and then we come back and get ready for that match at Forest and we’ll make sure we’re ready for it.”
