Clarets boss discusses Tottenham defeat
Manager Vincent Kompany admits his side have a lot of improvement to be made but there are positives to come from the opening three fixtures despite defeats.
The Clarets took the lead against Tottenham at a sun-shining Turf Moor on Saturday but the visitors turned that around with five goals to continue their unbeaten run.
Speaking to the media at full-time, Kompany reviewed the defeat but picked the positive points from the Clarets’ performance against Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Kompany said “It’s not something I’m happy about, but it’s easier to solve the defensive side than the lack of chances in the team.
“We create chances at a very high level, so against teams like Manchester City, Aston Villa and now Tottenham and that’s something we have to keep in our game while also becoming more solid.
“That’s something you can work on and our team still has a lot of improvement in it.
“We know it’s a challenge and if you look at the total amount of points the promoted sides have got this season, you realise obviously every game is going to be tough.”
The Belgian added: “I’ve spent 11 years of my life in the Premier League, so I have a pretty good understanding of what it is.
“This one was no different. It’s a quality side with lots of attacking threat and at times, especially in the second-half, we had a period of time where we weren’t able to compete.
“Either side of that period there are some positives, but not enough to compete with that level of team at this moment.”
Kompany is hoping that his side can learn and take things away after the 5-2 defeat to Spurs but believes runs of form like this can bring improvements to his side.
“If I speak for myself, during my career I’ve not just been a good leader or captain because of the good times, it’s easy to be a good leader in good times.
“It’s usually keeping people calm, focusing on doing the analysis on things that need to be better and decide for yourself what you want as a next step to improve.
“My goal is to say ‘okay, next time we play Tottenham or City can we again show we’ve either closed the gap or given ourselves a chance to win those games?’ That’s how you approach it.
“You will do everything you can to avoid defeats but it’s in these moments you learn the most about the character of your players, the players in the dressing room and how your team can respond and get better.”
