Clarets fall to defeat at Turf Moor to Spurs
Despite taking an early lead at Turf Moor, Burnley suffered a 5-2 defeat to an in-form and undefeated in the league Tottenham Hotspur side.
Lyle Foster struck the opener with four minutes on the clock before an equaliser from Heung Min Son and Cristian Romero’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave Spurs the advantage at the break.
James Maddison then curled in a third early in the second half to double the lead before Son grabbed two more goals to seal a hat-trick.
Substitute Josh Brownhill snatched a late consolation goal for the Clarets in stoppage time.
Manager Vincent Kompany made two changes from the side that lost to Aston Villa last weekend with Jordan Beyer returning to the line-up for Hannes Delcroix and Johann Berg Gudmundsson coming in on the right for Manuel Benson.
First Half
Burnley started on the front foot and were quick out the blocks on a sun-drenched Turf Moor afternoon.
Berge spread the ball out wide to the on-rushing Roberts, who sent a pass down the left for Koleosho with the young forward racing into the area and squaring perfectly to Foster lurking on the edge of the six-yard box to slot home past Vicario.
Despite a positive start for the hosts and a couple of half-chances from Foster again following dangerous through ball and a corner from Gudmundsson, it was the visitors who struck with an equaliser on the 16th minute.
Spurs’ summer signing Solomon broke forward in attack alongside Son to his right, with the South Korean striker drifting towards the far post before dinking the ball over the Trafford after a neat one-two with Solomon.
Kompany’s men looked for an instant response and came close to regaining the lead once again when Amdouni’s fierce strike from 25-yards out fizzed just wide of Vicario’s goal as the Swiss international looked to grab a second goal in as many games for the Clarets.
It was an all-action affair in Lancashire and on the half-hour mark Postecoglu’s side looked to add a second, as Porro darted down the left before whipping a low cross in for Kulusevski with the Swede unable to control possession and unleash an effort on goal.
Maddison then tried his luck after feeding the ball into Porro on the edge of the area and rifling the receiving pass on target with Trafford forced to palm the ball away.
After an end-to-end clash between the two sides, it was Spurs who led at the break after Romero fired in from outside the area two minutes into stoppage time to give the away side the advantage.
Second Half
Kompany turned to his bench at the break with the Clarets searching for a way back into the clash as Brownhill and Delcroix were introduced for Gudmundsson and Berge.
The changes looked to have nearly instantly paid off as the lively Koleosho did excellently to skip past both Porro and Sarr before teeing up Brownhill, who curled the ball just over the crossbar from 30-yards out.
However, 10 minutes into the second half it was Spurs who added a third as Maddison received the ball outside the area before gaining five yards and striking it round Trafford into the bottom corner.
Burnley came close to halving the deficit just two minutes later when Amdouni threaded a perfectly-timed through ball in for Foster but the South African’s effort took a deflection off Romero and over for a corner.
Tottenham then added two more goals in the space of five minutes with a pair of strikes from Son to seal his hat-trick.
Brownhill fired in a late strike in stoppage time to make the final score 5-2.
