Defender speaks after draw with Wolves

Dom Cooper was pleased to see work in training pay off for the Clarets goal in their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Captain Alethea Paul crossed to the back post where Leah Embley was waiting to tap the ball past Wolves ‘keeper Shan Turner.

This is something Cooper says the full-back’s work on during their pre-match preparations, and she was glad to see it come to life during a game situation.

The defender stated: “We work on these sorts of crosses all the time in training, and I think it was a great ball into the middle from Thea [Paul], and brilliant from Leah [Embley] to follow the ball up and get her goal.

“I think Wolves came and gave us a good game; I think we deserved the three points, but we’ll take a point, and it was an all-round good team performance and I thought we played really well.

Laura Elford returned to the side for the first time this season, after an injury kept her out of the first two games, when she replaced Aimee Kelly after 69 minutes.

And Cooper believes, ahead of the game against Fylde next Thursday, the return of the forward will only benefit the Claret Women.

She added: “She’s a massive personality, and in that sense, I do think we’ve missed her, and it was good for us to get her back on the pitch and obviously it was a nice moment for her as well.

“We take each game as it comes and now, we’ll prepare so we’re ready for Fylde on Thursday.

“I think we can go there and get three points; I think it will be tough, but we can go there and give them a really good game to build on our strong start to the league season.”
