Berge, Bruun Larsen, O’Shea and Odobert score first Burnley goals in Salford win

Burnley cruised into fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory against Salford City at the Peninsula Stadium.

Sander Berge opened the scoring for the Clarets before Jacob Bruun Larsen doubled the visitors’ lead just eight minutes later, before Dara O’Shea steered home the third just before the half-hour mark.

Wilson Odobert was named in the starting line-up for his full debut and after enjoying a lively evening, the 19-year-old fired in the fourth 10 minutes from time.

Manager Vincent Kompany made 11 changes from the side that played Manchester United at Turf Moor on Saturday night.

Arijanet Muric replaced James Trafford between the sticks whilst Jack Cork and Dara O’Shea occupied the centre of defence in place of Ameen Al-Dakhil and Jordan Beyer.

Odobert was handed his first start for the Club, with Manuel Benson, Anass Zaroury and Jacob Bruun Larsen all came into the line-up for Josh Brownhill, Aaron Ramsey and Luca Koleosho.

First Half

The Clarets dominated the ball in the opening 10 minutes at the Peninsula and got the opening goal with just 12 minutes on the clock.

Zaroury whipped in a fine ball from a corner which was met by the head of Berge towering inside the area to crash home a header into the back of the net for his first goal in Claret & Blue.

Kompany’s side then doubled their lead just eight minutes later and Zaroury picked up his second assist of the night, as the Moroccan forward threaded a perfectly timed ball in for Bruun Larsen to lift perfectly over the oncoming Cairns and trickle into the Salford goal.

Burnley were cruising and had a third goal of the night just before the half-hour mark and Zaroury sealed his hat-trick of assists, after firing a free-kick low towards the front post for O’Shea to turn home from close range.

Just as things were going perfectly well at Moor Lane, Kompany was forced into an early change after Benson picked up a knock and subsequently made way for Tresor.

The Clarets then thought they had a fourth of the cup tie just 10 minutes later when Rodriguez picked out substitute Tresor inside the box to fire in past Cairns unmarked but the provider was flagged for offside in the build-up.

Odobert then came close to snatching his first goal for the Clarets and a fourth of the game just before the break, after Bruun Larsen’s pinpoint cross found the young Frenchman at the back-post only to fire over the crossbar.

Second Half

After an impressive first half, the Clarets started the second on the front foot and it was Odobert involved once again after seeing his strike denied by the legs of Cairns in the 47th minute.

Salford forced their first corner of the game when McAleny broke through towards goal before an excellent sliding interception from O’Shea took the ball away from danger out for a corner.

With 65 minutes played, Kompany then made a double change and introduced Massengo for his debut coming on for Bruun Larsen in midfield with Roberts replacing Vitinho at right-back.

Odobert’s persistence paid off as the France U21 international then fired home the fourth of the evening with just 10 minutes left on the clock to put Burnley through to the next round.
