Newcastle United
Former Clarets boss Eddie Howe is currently in his third season in charge of United after taking over in October 2021.
Howe ensured United stayed up in his first campaign under the newly confirmed ownership, before reaching the Carabao Cup final and cementing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season to bring Champions League football back to St James’ Park for the first time since 2003.
Ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, United added several new players to the squad ahead of their return to European football.
Italy international Sandro Tonali arrived from AC Milan, whilst Harvey Barnes joined from Leicester City following the Foxes’ relegation from the top-flight.
20-year-old Tino Livramento signed from Southampton and boyhood Magpies fan Lewis Hall penned a season-long loan deal at St James’ Park.
A handful of players left the club in the summer with the most noticeable being winger Allan Saint Maximin who joined Al-Ahli whilst Karl Darlow & Chris Wood moved on permanently. Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden and Harrison Ashby all departed on loan.
Form Guide
Burnley head into Saturday’s clash following a 4-0 win over Salford City in the Carabao Cup third round, after a positive and promising display against Manchester United at Turf Moor last weekend saw the Clarets narrowly lose out 1-0 to the Reds.
Prior to the Man United defeat, the Clarets picked up their first point of the season at Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw after three home defeats to Manchester City, Aston Villa and Spurs.
After a thumping opening day 5-1 victory against Aston Villa, Newcastle lost their next three games in the Premier League against Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.
Following that run of form, the Magpies have turned a corner and responded with a win at home to Brentford, a goalless draw at the San Siro against AC Milan, an 8-0 thrashing over Sheffield United and a Carabao Cup win against Manchester City on Wednesday.
What Vincent Kompany said
“There are not many harder away grounds that are harder than that ground. I’m really interested in seeing where the team is against that level away from home.
“It’s something I’m looking forward to. If you play well at St James’, it’s not just about playing well, we want the result like every other game. It’s not arrogant to say that, why else are you in the Premier League?
“But a performance at St James’ Park should give you the feeling that you can perform everywhere in this league.
“That’s what you’re in the game for. For every tough opponent, every team of that calibre, there is a small opportunity to do something special and that you’ll be remembered for.”
