Midfielder disappointed with defeat but keen to take positives from performance

Josh Brownhill captained the Clarets in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park.

Speaking after the game, the midfielder was disappointed with the result, after the away side had shown positive signs in the early spells – but believes winning fixtures will come in time.

“It’s gutting to come away with nothing again. It’s a really hard place to come, they make it a fortress here, they’ve got some very good players and they ended up in the top four last year for a reason. They’ve got a really good team and they’re doing well this year. But there’s a lot of positives still to take – as much as it’ll be hard to see with the result what it was but there were still some good performances out there. With the ball and creating chances, if we score in the first five or ten minutes with a big chance then the game would be completely different.

“They put one in the top corner and then we were in the game up until the second goal which is a frustrating one, it’s something we could have avoided, it’s a penalty but you know I think try not to be too disheartened and go again on Tuesday.”

It took an Almiron wonder goal for Newcastle to take the lead in the 14th minute after the home side had started brightly.

“The last three games have been three worldie goals that have happened but that’s the Premier League and that’s the quality that they’ve got and we’ve got to sort of start doing that ourselves.

“It’s still early doors, the start’s been really tough, and it doesn’t really get any easier. Obviously, we’ve got Luton on Tuesday and Chelsea on the Saturday. Then we go into the international break and we’re going to have to start picking up points – we know that and its still early days. The squad’s only getting better and better. If you see the first three games, the performances then to the performances now I feel like they’re getting so much better. I think you should have so much more confidence in us as a team because for spells we’ve come here and we’ve dominated possession, created a few chances which not a lot of teams have done since coming here.”

Brownhill was keen to emphasise the positive signs the Clarets have shown in the previous games and for spells this afternoon – and said that the creation of chances means that the goals and points will come.

“It’s the hardest thing in the world to put the ball in the back of the net and that’s why they get the money. You’ve just got to stay positive with the chances that we’re creating – it’d be worrying if we didn’t create chances. We created chances from the beginning of the season, we’ve looked very good in spells and I’m sure they’ll be a game soon where we hit them for three or four maybe.

“We’re still a new team, we’re still gelling. If you look back at this time last year, yeah, we had more points, but it was an easier league last year than what it is here. I’m sure over the next few games we’ll start showing even more quality that we’ve got.”

The defeat sees Burnley go on the hunt for their first league win at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night against fellow newly promoted side Luton Town.

“It’s the games that we’ve got to win. We played Forest a few weeks ago and we put out a really good performance, probably should have come away with the three points if that goal counted. Tuesday will be no different, they’re in the Premier League, they’re a really good team, we saw that last year. But we feel like we’ll go there, and we’ll put on a really good performance if its anything like the last three games, the signs of good quality are there. So, hopefully we’ll go there, and we’ll get the three points.”
