Clarets chief takes positives from Newcastle loss

Manager Vincent Kompany admits although it’s important for his side to take the chances created, the Clarets boss believes results will come following another positive and promising performance

Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, who sealed their fourth win in a row, Kompany’s side started the stronger out of the two and could have taken the lead in the first half on a couple of occasions.

Luca Koleosho was involved in both of the early chances, after aiming for Aaron Ramsey in the area after beating Dan Burn before then squaring to Zeki Amdouni to fire straight at Nick Pope in the United goal.

Against the run of play following a bright start, Newcastle then took the lead through Miguel Almiron and Kompany insists it’s ‘key’ for his team to take the chances but believes the ingredients is coming together.

The Burnley boss said: “We started well, we stayed in the game and we probably made a mistake that took the game away from us.

“We had our moments and if it was having the ball or not having the ball, we were able to create our moments and that’s something you can build from.

“That’s the key thing. You play in these big games and sometimes you need a bit of luck and you need to take your chances and those are the ingredients you need.

“Ok at the moment it didn’t happen, but I think for us it’s important to believe performances will bring results and I think we showed a lot of good signs in the bits of the game people want to associate with good sides.”

Kompany added: “We worked hard off the ball, we defended the box really well, we won a lot of second balls.

“You’re playing against a very good side so it’s supposed to be tough, it’s not supposed to be easy coming to St James’ Park.

“I can’t fault the team for the performance, I thought they battled and showed character. Not just with what people want to associate us with, but defending the box, working hard, winning second balls and the rest you play against a good side.

“I think there are plenty of managers that have come here, especially of newly promoted sides, and said to win games here or to get a result you need to have a little bit of luck on your side and you need to take your moments.”

The Clarets have come up against five of last season’s top eight in the Premier League in the opening six games and Kompany is pleased with the progress his side has made already this season and is looking forward to Tuesday’s trip to Luton.

“The first eight games, City, United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Villa, Chelsea and as a newly-promoted team I’m not that naive to guess it’s not this type of start.

“But we did really well against Forest, we showed a positive performance against United and today again.
“Against Luton, everybody knows, we just want to get a result.

“We think we can get results against Luton, we think we can get results in the future against teams like today.”
