Clarets resume Premier League Cup campaign with Bees visit
Burnley FC’s U21s side are back in action on Saturday, as they welcome Brentford to Victory Park in a Premier League Cup Group G tie.
The Clarets come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw against Fleetwood Town at the Burnley Training Centre in the Professional Development League.
Tom Tweedy struck for the Clarets, before Finn Armstrong levelled with 15 minutes to go, and Joe Westley missed a spot kick in the 82nd minute and that meant that the points were shared in the home game.
In their previous Premier League Cup game, Burnley came out on top in a seven-goal thriller against Leicester City, winning 4-3 to get an early three points in the group, in their opening game.
Wanya Marcal opened the scoring for the visitors before Joe Westley netted the leveller on the brink of half time.
Amani Richards put the Foxes back in front after the break, but Basilio Rieno Socoliche almost instantly replied with an effort from close range.
Three minutes later substitute Lewis Richardson put the Clarets in front for the first time in the game, and Westley bagged his brace to establish a two-goal advantage.
Silko Thomas scored a consolation in the final moments of the game, but Burnley had already done enough to secure the victory.
That result leaves the U21s sat 2nd in Premier League Cup Group G.
Saturday’s opponents Brentford, lost 6-1 in their opening group game, against Fulham at Laithwaite Community Stadium.
George Okkas and Callum McFarlane both struck in the first half to give the Cottagers a 2-0 lead at the break.
Michael Olakigbe pulled one back for Brentford six minutes after the break before Okkas struck again and Terrell Works, Callum Osmand and Oliver O’Neill put the game beyond doubt and sealed a convincing win for the visitors.
Brentford sit bottom of the group on goal difference following that result.
The game will take place at Chorley’s Victory Park, and will be free entry for all supporters, and if you cannot make it to this cup fixture, full coverage of the game will be available on X @ClaretsAcademy, and a match report will follow on burnleyfc.com.
