Chelsea

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was announced as Chelsea manager in May earlier this year following Chelsea’s 12th place finish last term and there was a summer of changes at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Midfielder Moises Caicedo joined for record £116m from Brighton, Romeo Lavia joined from Southampton, Christopher Nkunku arrived from RB Leipzig and Cole Palmer signed from Manchester City on deadline day.

Striker Nicolas Jackson was added to the attacking ranks from Villareal, whilst Axel Disasi arrived from Monaco and Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez joined from Brighton.

As well as a flurry of incomings, the Blues saw a number of departures across the summer transfer window as Pochettino began to build his squad together.

Blues academy product Mason Mount joined Manchester United, Kai Havertz signed for Arsenal, Mateo Kovacic left for Manchester City and Christian Pulisic was snapped up by AC Milan.

Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and Ngolo Kante all moved to teams in the Saudi Pro League, whilst Romelu Lukaku signed for Roma on a season-long loan and Callum Hudson Odoi joined Nottingham Forest.

Form guide

The Clarets come into the weekend’s clash after picking up their first three points of the season at Luton Town on Tuesday night as goals from Lyle Foster and Jacob Bruun Larsen sealed a 2-1 victory at Kenilworth Road.

Prior to that, Kompany’s side had lost 2-0 at Newcastle United at the weekend, before the Magpies then thrashed PSG 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League just four days later at St James’ Park.

Chelsea picked up their second win of the Premier League season on Monday night with Mykhaylo Mudryk and Armando Broja getting on the scoresheet against Fulham in a 2-0 win.

League form before that had seen the Blues lose at home to both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest with a goalless draw at AFC Bournemouth.

What Vincent Kompany said

“I can’t deny it must be a sense of relief for a lot of the players, especially the ones who had never won in the Premier League.

“I think for us now it’s reminding ourselves we move on. We’ve got Chelsea soon and that’s obviously a key game for us back at home.

“I believe the team had confidence before Luton but there’s no doubt in my mind we can take many positives from that game into the Chelsea game on Saturday.”
