Captain talks disappointing second-half against Blues
Josh Brownhill described feeling devastated following Burnley’s 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
A packed Turf Moor saw the Clarets take the lead before an equaliser from the visitors just before half-time and three second half goals ensure they sealed three points in the challenging encounter.
“Devastated really. I thought the first half we were pretty good, obviously got ourselves ahead against a really good team who are always going to cause chances. To go in at 1-1 at half-time you’ll take that, fortunate for I think it was an own goal. But, second half come out, give away a penalty early on, the momentums with them, they’ve got some good players and before you know it, we’re down 4-1.
“It was a disappointing second-half, but I think we’ve just got to rally round each other. It’s been a really tough start, after the international break now I think we’ve got some very winnable games that inside the dressing room we think we’re going to pick up some points from and you know, we’ll do that.”
The home side were in positive form early on with youngster Wilson Odobert putting the side ahead 15 minutes into the first-half, and Brownhill was pleased for his 18-year-old teammate.
“I’m happy for him, he’s a real talent. We’ve got some really talented young players in this team and today was his chance to start and I thought first-half he was excellent, caused a lot of trouble down the side and a great finish. From an 18-year-old against one of the best teams in Europe and one of the best in the Premier League so for him very happy.”
The afternoon was set to be an exciting challenge with Burnley aiming to build on the momentum from Tuesday night’s first league win away at Luton’s Town Kenilworth Road, which makes the result on home turf that bit harder to take for the Clarets Captain.
“It’s disappointing, all we want to do is show that we can compete against these sides and get points on the board, especially at home, and we haven’t really done that so far this season. But the fans have been brilliant, hopefully they can stick with us and sort of realise that you know when you play against the top teams it’s really difficult, it’s not easy. So, if they stick with us, I’m sure we’ll be fine because like I say there’s some games that are coming up, you’d like to think that we’ll start getting more points on the board and climb up the table a little bit more.”
Burnley now have the international break to recoup before hitting the road in two weeks’ time against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium and Brownhill believes the break will give the team time to reflect before going again.
“It’s probably come at the right time, obviously we’ve had a really difficult week this week with Newcastle, Luton and Chelsea, three games in a week and there’s nothing better after that than to have a little bit of down time. A few of the lads will go away with their internationals and play some games. For the rest of us just got to sort of rest, try and take your mind off football for a week and then get back at it, as like I say, it’s an important game that’s going to be coming up and I’m sure we’ll be ready for that one.”
