Clarets boss reflects on Blue loss
Manager Vincent Kompany says his side were ‘hurt’ following the 4-1 loss to Chelsea at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon after a strong first half but wants his side to learn from the defeat.
The Clarets started brightly and deservedly broke the deadlock with 15 minutes played through Wilson Odobert, who was handed his first start in the Premier League.
But just before the break Chelsea were level and then grabbed three goals in the second half to put the game out of reach despite Burnley being the better side in the opening 45 minutes.
Speaking post-match, Kompany praised his team’s first half performance but was disappointed in the goals conceded in the second 45.
Kompany said: “I think it’s the story of the game. Games are 95 minutes now and you have to be good for all of it.
“We had a solid first half and started really strong, but in the second half and the way we conceded and giving the penalty away is just a really bad start to a second half.
“At half-time we wanted to refocus and put ourselves back to the task in the second half and those small details matter in this league.
“Eventually you’ll get results, but after what looked to be a strong start it didn’t materialise and we have to learn from it. We’re working on this but it’s today hurt us.”
Kompany added: “There’s no quicker way for us to learn than to get out there and learn on the pitch.
“We know there’s a gap between us and the top top teams but if you go like you did in the first half you give yourselves a chance.”
Kompany knows what his side are capable of and the danger the Clarets can pose on opposition but the Burnley boss says his side will continue the hard work and be ready for post-international break.
“I know these players, they can cause problems to every opponent, but it’s not just about that it’s about every single phase.
“If it’s not today then fine, but we are getting there and working everyday to get things right.
“We have the international break now and the players that aren’t away will be working hard then we’ll be getting ready for the next match.”
