Clarets suffer defeat to the Blues

The Clarets got off to a dream start at a sun shining Turf Moor when Wilson Odobert fired Burnley ahead on his first Premier League start with 15 minutes played.

Following a strong first half, Chelsea then equalised just before the break through an own goal, before a Cole Palmer penalty and strikes from Raheem Sterling & Nicolas Jackson sealed the victory for the away side.

Manager Vincent Kompany made four changes to the side that beat Luton Town on Tuesday night at Kenilworth Road.

Hannes Delcroix and Vitinho came into the defence for Jordan Beyer and Connor Roberts whilst Zeki Amdouni and Luca Koleosho made way in attack for Odobert and Mike Tresor with the duo making their first starts for the Club in the Premier League.

First Half

After a fairly even opening to the game, it was Palmer who worked himself forward towards the box and fired the first effort of the game well over the crossbar from 25-yards out.

Shortly after, Sterling had a chance of his own after latching onto Palmer’s pass and cutting inside before curling the ball just wide of Trafford’s post.

However, the Clarets responded to the Blues’ early pressure with the opening goal with just 15 minutes on the clock.

Foster, fresh after scoring on his return to the side on Tuesday night, charged down the centre of Chelsea’s half dribbling past both Silva and Disasi, before teeing up Odobert inside the area to slot home past Sanchez from the left and mark his first PL start with a goal.

The Clarets were thriving with confidence and so was Odobert, as the home side came close to a second goal not long after the first when Tresor latched onto the young Frenchman’s cross but guided the ball wide of the target from close range.

Cullen then made a vital sliding challenge to take the ball away from the feet of an unmarked Enzo at the back post, as the World Cup winning midfielder was gearing up to fire towards goal from just yards out but had to settle for a corner.

Trafford was then forced into action to deny Sterling from rifling in at his near post after the winger took Caicedo’s pass into the area and fired straight at the England U21s shot stopper.

But with just three minutes to go until the break, Chelsea had their equaliser when Sterling raced into the area and saw his attempted cross into the centre was deflect in off the unfortunate Al-Dakhil and loop into the back of the net.

Second Half

Both teams made changes at the break as O’Shea replaced Al-Dakhil in defence for the Clarets and Jackson came on for Broja in the Blues’ attack.

It was Chelsea who started brightly and won themselves a penalty just two minutes in the second period. Vitinho was adjudged to have brought down Sterling inside the area, Palmer then stepped up to the spot and fired home from 12-yards to give the visitors the lead.

Burnley looked for an instant equaliser when Odobert then tried his luck with a stinging effort from just outside the area but Sanchez was equal to it and tipped the effort over the crossbar for a corner.

With the Clarets searching for a second of the afternoon Kompany turned to his bench and made a treble change which saw Ramsey, Koleosho and Roberts replace Cullen, Tresor and Vitinho.

However, just four minutes after the trio were introduced, Chelsea had a third of the afternoon when Gallagher picked up the ball inside Burnley’s half and drove towards goal before picking out Sterling to his left to curl into the far corner.

Pochettino’s side then added a fourth of the game when Palmer squared the ball to substitute Jackson to slot home from just yards out.
