Clarets suffer defeat in London
Yoan Wissa gave the Bees a half-time lead at the Gtech Stadium before Bryan Mbeumo doubled the hosts’ lead on the hour mark. Substitute Saman Ghoddos then added a third just before the end.
Manager Vincent Kompany made three changes from the side that played last time out against Chelsea.
Dara O’Shea, Zeki Amdouni and Connor Roberts all came into the XI for Hannes Delcroix, Vitinho and Josh Brownhill.
First Half
There was an early chance for the Bees, when the hosts played a quick free-kick and Maupay was played into the area but the forward struck his effort wide of the target.
Burnley then created an opportunity of their own when Foster charged the ball down with former Claret defender Collins chasing him but the South African couldn’t get a shot off before Tresor joined in and curled the ball just wide of the post.
Onyeka then forced Trafford into action after flicking Mbeumo’s dinked cross towards goal but the young shot-stopper had it covered.
The Clarets were denied a penalty shout shortly after when Tresor was wiped out by Onyeka inside the area as the forward attempted to latch onto Foster’s pass.
But it was the home side who took the lead midway through the first half when Maupay picked out Mbeumo racing into the box with the wideman playing a low cross across the face of goal for Wissa to turn home at the back post.
Mbeumo then had a chance of his own to double the lead on the half-hour mark, but his fizzing effort from just outside the area was pushed away well by the hands of Trafford for a corner.
Brentford were in the driving seat heading towards the break and came close to a second goal of the afternoon when Norgaard’s strike took a deflection off Wissa forcing Trafford into a terrific reflex stop to keep the score at 1-0.
The last chance of the half did fall to the Clarets though when Tresor picked out Amdouni who fired a first-time ball aiming for the top corner but Flekken was equal to it and palmed it away for a corner.
Second Half
After a half-time change with Koleosho replacing Odobert, Burnley started the second half on the front foot and earnt themselves a corner when Tresor’s teasing cross was cleared away.
But with an hour played, it was who the hosts were pushing for a second and got it when Mbeumo broke forward and curled it home into the far corner from outside the box to double the lead.
Kompany turned to his bench with 25 minutes to play with Brownhill and Bruun Larsen replacing Berge and Tresor in search of way back into it.
The Clarets then had a chance to half the deficit in the 73rd minute when Foster broke towards goal and squared to an unmarked Koleosho 12-yards out but the young forward could only guide the ball wide of the target.
Burnley’s afternoon got worse when Roberts was shown a second yellow card before the end for a foul on Wissa.
Ghoddos hammered home a third of the game with three minutes to play.
