Midfielder describes his disappointment at Brentford loss
Josh Cullen described Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford as hugely disappointing following a tough afternoon at The Gtech Stadium.
“Obviously, it was hugely disappointing. The first half especially was really disappointing, I don’t think we did the basics well enough especially in the first half and when you don’t do the basics in any game of football, you’re going to struggle to stamp your authority on the game. That’s what we did first half.
“We were still in the game though, went in 1-0 down obviously and I feel like we started the second half much better, on the front foot, but yeah in key moments at the minute we haven’t been quite good enough. We need to learn fast, but we need to stick together as a group and go again next week.
“I think the start of the second start we definitely looked like the most likely team, that’s what it felt like on the pitch. It felt like we did the basics better which then allowed us to show what we can do on the ball and in possession and start playing our game.
“I think that’s the main message for us to takeaway from today is that we’re nothing without the basics and the fight we need to show as a team, and we can’t accept that from what happened in the first half. So, yes, we’ve just got to go again.”
The Clarets are on the road again next weekend, with another trip down south, this time to take on Bournemouth and Cullen believes another game in quick succession is important in the aim to get points on the board.
“Yeah, every game’s important but it’s a great opportunity for us to bounce back next week, that’s the good thing about football there’s always the next week, the next game. So, we’ve got to stick together as a group, in what’s a difficult time at the moment. Obviously, the dressing room’s not overly pleased with how we performed today but we need to stick together as a group and go again next week and do everything we can, like we always do to get the win.”
Burnley possess one of the youngest sides in the league on average and when asked what advice he would give to the younger players in the squad, the Republic of Ireland international who captained the visitors for today’s game added: “I think that it’s football – you have ups and downs, highs and lows and it’s trying to keep that constant mindset that we keep doing what we believe in and what we know works for us. And, yes, we’ve just got to keep going, it’s as simple as that there’s no time to dwell on a bad result, especially at this level. We’ve got to pick ourselves up in training next week, be together as a squad like we always are and be ready to go to Bournemouth next week.”
