Midfielder looks ahead to Bournemouth trip
Sander Berge insists the Clarets are still confident and have plenty of belief within the way the team are implementing their style of play under Vincent Kompany.
The Norwegian midfielder admits although the team are still learning and improving every game, Berge believes that the talent amongst the squad and spells shown in previous games can get Burnley points on the board.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to the Vitality Stadium, Berge discussed the recent frustration from results but highlighted the positives and wants to take them into this weekend.
The 25-year-old said: “First of all, it’s always frustrating to not win football games as a player. You work your hardest and come out there on the pitch to be the best you can be to win games.
“There is a lot of talent amongst this team and as a team we are getting better every day and gelling together as a squad. Learning each other’s strengths and also working out any weaknesses and improving them in training.
“We’re still confident and not stressing about results. We still have our target in the long run and it’s a marathon and if we keep doing things right in training and putting it into games, I know the results will come.”
Berge added: “We believe in how we do things and think this is the best way to get the most points from games with the players we have.
“I think you can see we are committed to the way we want to play and it takes a lot at this level but it’s important for us to show our football and that we can get results from it.”
After losing at Brentford last weekend, Berge acknowledged the performance ‘wasn’t good enough’ and says the side most continue the positive spells for longer periods.
The midfielder explained: “We know the weekend (Brentford) wasn’t good enough. They controlled it, won duels and they got into the rhythm of it.
“We showed in the second half we stood up and were more brave, aggressive and got at them but for us now it’s about keeping them spells as long as possible and keeping them going.
“It’s just a learning curve, we have a new young squad with a different system and we just need to learn quick as a group and continue doing what we know we can do on the pitch.
“We all try help each other. Everyone understands when you are a promoted team a lot of the time you are an underdog and no one expects to go out every game and get three points every time but at the same time our ambition every match is to go out there and get something from it.”
The Clarets travel to Bournemouth on Saturday, who are still yet to win this season however Berge knows it will be a difficult clash but has all eyes on claiming three points on the road.
“Every game is big. This game will probably be built up outside here as a ‘huge one’ and I imagine some people will say the loser of this game is a certain relegated side already.
“But for us, we know there’s 28 games to go and it doesn’t change. For us it’s all about focussing on ourselves and being the best we can be and delivering a proper performance which we can build on.
“Our aim is always to win. That’s what we will be looking to do this weekend, but we know it won’t be easy and they will pose a challenge for us.
“We know it will be a difficult game on Saturday. It’s another different challenge for us, away from home but we have to show for ourselves and what we’re about and that we can compete under difficult circumstances.
