Clarets suffer defeat to the Cherries
Charlie Taylor fired home his first goal for the Club in the 11th minute with a sweet strike from the edge of the area before Antoine Semenyo equalised for the Cherries midway through the first half. Phillip Billing then struck the winning goal for Bournemouth 15 minutes from time.
Manager Vincent Kompany made five changes from the side that played at Brentford last weekend.
Vitinho replaced the suspended Connor Roberts with Josh Brownhill and Johann Berg Gudmundsson coming in for Sander Berge and Mike Tresor in midfield
Luca Koleosho replaced Wilson Odobert on the left and Anass Zaroury came into the XI for the ill Lyle Foster.
First Half
The first effort on target came with eight minutes on the clock when Tavernier’s stinging free-kick from the edge of the area was pushed over the crossbar by Trafford.
But Burnley took the lead in emphatic fashion just four minutes later when Taylor picked up the ball on the edge of the area and lashed home his first goal for the Clarets from a corner to give the visitors the advantage.
There was an early scare for an equaliser just moments after the opener when Semenyo’s fizzing low cross found Tavernier at the back-post but the former Middlesbrough midfielder could only guide it over the target.
However, the Cherries did then pull the scores level midway through the first half when Semenyo broke forward towards goal and slotted the ball across Trafford and into the bottom corner.
10 minutes later, Bournemouth came close to taking the lead themselves as Mepham’s crashing header from Scott’s corner was palmed away from goal by Trafford for another corner.
Semenyo then had an opportunity to double his tally for the afternoon after weaving into the box and seeing his drilled effort blocked for another corner.
Billing then tried his luck for the hosts with a strike just before the break but the Dane’s effort sailed well over from range.
Second Half
With the scores level at the break, Kompany turned to his bench and introduced Jay Rodriguez for Zeki Amdouni in search of a second goal.
Tavernier tested Trafford once again just before the hour mark after being slipped in by Semenyo but the Burnley No.1 had it covered.
60 minutes passed on the clock and with both sides still pushing for a winning goal, the Clarets made a second change as Berge replaced Cullen in midfield. The Irishman will miss next Saturday’s clash with Palace through suspension following five yellow cards.
As both teams searched for a second of the afternoon, the hosts grabbed it with 15 minutes left to play. Billing picked up the ball and drove towards goal before lifting the ball over Trafford from range to put Bournemouth ahead.
The away side looked for an instant response to the Cherries taking the lead and Kompany introduced the attacking duo of Redmond and Tresor in place of Koleosho and Gudmundsson.
The Clarets then looked to have equalised in the 88th minute when Redmond slipped in Rodriguez who fired home but was flagged offside.
After a lengthy VAR review on the on-field decision, the goal was ruled out.
Berge then came inches close to equalising for the Clarets but his effort took a deflection into the hands of Radu.
