Clarets fall to defeat at Turf Moor to the Eagles
Despite starting brightly and creating some early chances, Palace took the lead midway through the first half as Jordan Ayew teed up Jeffrey Schlupp to slide home before Tyrick Mitchell added a second in stoppage time.
Manger Vincent Kompany made three changes from the side that played AFC Bournemouth last weekend.
Jordan Beyer came back into the defence replacing Ameen Al-Dakhil, whilst Sander Berge came in for the suspended Josh Cullen and Jay Rodriguez for Anass Zaroury.
First Half
The Clarets started on the front foot and were the better side in the opening 10 minutes at a bouncing Turf Moor after winning an early corner & outing Palace under plenty of pressure, Amdouni then saw a header fizz wide of the post.
Despite the hosts starting on the front foot and enjoying more of the possession, Palace took the lead midway through the first half when Ayew came away with the ball from a duel with Beyer and squared to Schlupp to slide home from close range.
Burnley looked for a response a few minutes later and came close to an equaliser when Taylor’s cross was met by the head of Gudmundsson who could only glance the ball narrowly past the post.
Koleosho then looked to be through in the area after latching onto Taylor’s long ball over the defence but a perfectly timed sliding challenge took the ball away from Koleosho who gearing up for a shot.
The young Italian forward was looking a threat every time he picked up the ball and had another opportunity when he rifled a quick free-kick straight at Johnstone forcing the shot-stopper to tip it over.
Second Half
Burnley’s first real chance of the second half came 10 minutes in when O’Shea picked out Rodriguez inside the area only for the striker to plant his header off target.
The Clarets were surging for an equalising goal and it was Koleosho involved once again, this time the winger broke into the box and teed up Gudmundsson who poked it just wide.
Kompany’s side were in the driving seat past the hour mark and the hosts thought they had a deserved equaliser when Rodriguez fired home only for the forward to be flagged for offside from Amdouni’s stinging effort.
With 15 minutes left and Burnley still searching for an equaliser, Kompany made a double change which saw Redmond and Odobert replace Amdouni and Koleosho.
Brownhill then tried his luck from just outside the area with a looping strike but Johnstone was equal to it and tipped it over.
From the following corner Rodriguez saw his towering header denied once again by Johnstone.
The game was put out of reach in stoppage time when Mitchell slotted home from Eze’s pass.
