Goalscorer on massive win at Bramall Lane

Johann Berg Gudmundsson said he was ‘super proud’ of his teammates following Burnley’s stunning win over Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

The substitute got off to the perfect start at Bramall Lane when introduced in the 70th minute, it took just seconds for the Icelandic international to find the back of the net, firing the Clarets into a 4-1 lead.

Speaking after the game, the 33-year-old said: “I’m feeling really happy. To get a win in this league is always difficult. We’ve been working hard the whole season, obviously not the place we want to be but to come here today and still to have the opportunity to stay in the league is massive.

“It’s a difficult place to come, Burnley have struggled here for a long time so to come here and put on a performance like that was a great thing to see.”

Ahead of the trip manager Vincent Kompany said he wanted his side to attack the game and show no fear. Were there any pre-match nerves in what was a big battle with both sides in need of points?

“No I think the last few games we’ve had to go into every game like that. It’s down to that, each game you have to get some points to stay in this league, we know where we are. We’re fully aware of that. But as I say we’re attacking each game and going out there with absolutely no fear, showing how good we are. We had some great performances this season but not the results we have wanted. So to come here, a difficult place as I’ve said, and get the three points is massive for us and we’re going to celebrate that definitely and onto the next one.”

Rounding off a fantastic away performance how happy was he to see his effort hit the back of the net?

“I just want to come in and help the team as much as possible. I’ve always said I always want to score as many goals as possible, that has not happened this season. But to get that in a crucial time was good for us to kill the game off. It’s always a tricky one if they come back 3-2 but to go 4-1 up was the killer for the game and I’m just happy to help the team.”

A Bramall Lane in full voice and several Sheffield United chances piled the pressure on the visitors in the opening stages and Clarets keeper Aro Muric was called upon making some crucial saves throughout.

“Yeah, absolutely fantastic. I think he kept us in the game. There were a few moments first half, a few moments at 2-1 as well when he made fantastic saves. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. We’re lucky to have two absolutely fantastic goalkeepers.

“He’s been unlucky the past two games but to come out here shows massive character and shows the team as well. We’ve been hard done the past few games I think and to come here to put in a performance like that was massive.”

The Clarets fans travelled in numbers to South Yorkshire and Gudmundsson is in no doubt the important part they will play in the remaining five fixtures.

“They are going to get us through these last games definitely. The whole season they have been behind us. Obviously, some frustrating times for them but I think they’ve stuck with us, especially today it was fantastic that we had them here. They just give us a lift; they gave us a lift today and hopefully the next game as well. It’s Man United away, it’s another massive one and we have to believe that we’re going to go there and pick up another three points.”

Burnley haven’t been lucky at the Lane in the past with just one win in the last twenty. Just how much confidence will today’s victory bring?

“It’s going to give us massive confidence. It’s a tough place to come to for every team, especially for us in the past few years. Last year they did a job on us, and it was time for us to show that we can come away from home and play some good football and that’s something we did today. I’m super proud of the team and everybody involved here, the substitutions worked well, the guys on the bench are supporting the team. We’re all in this together. As I said we take the next game, try to get the three points and see where it takes us.”
