Right-back reflects on Red Devils draw

Lorenz Assignon said Saturday afternoon’s draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford had left him feeling happy but slightly disappointed the Clarets didn’t manage to take home the three points.

Despite big chances for both sides, it took until the 79th minute for the first goal which went Manchester United’s way before Zeki Amdouni’s calmly taken penalty drew the sides level.

The right-back was delighted for his teammate to get on the scoresheet and was taking the positives from the number of chances the Clarets created on the day.

“It’s a really great point for the team and for the end of the season. We are really happy but a little bit disappointed because maybe we could have won this game at the end.”

The Clarets did come close to edging it late on when keeper Onana came up with a big save to deny youngster Wilson Odobert seconds before the final whistle. Did Assignon think they could edge it?

“Yes, it was a big game. They had chances, us too. You know that’s football, sometimes it’s for us, sometimes for them.”

VAR were called into action when a scramble in the penalty area resulted in a penalty for an Onana foul on Amdouni and Assignon was pleased to see his teammate convert from the spot – in front of the loud & proud travelling supporters.

“I was really happy because we made a great game with big chances but no goals, so the penalty was really good for us. We’re happy.

“He likes penalties. He trains for them in training, so we have confidence in him. I’m really happy for him!”

The result means it’s one defeat in eight games for the Clarets as they continue their fight to remain in the Premier League. With a point added to the tally what was manager Vincent Kompany’s message to the squad at full-time?

“The coach was really happy with this performance. He said we don’t need to be disappointed and he’s very happy and proud to coach this team. So, it’s good for us.”
